Mr. Seth M. Martin graduated summa cum laude from the University of the South, Sewanee, before earning his M.A. and Ph.D in English Literature from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Seth taught writing and literature at UNC, Sewanee, High Point, and Kennesaw State University before moving to Richmond and St. Catherine’s School in 2014 where he served as master teacher of English in the upper school. Over the years, his favorite classes to teach have focused on Beowulf, Shakespeare’s sonnets and plays, the Homeric epics, fairy tales, romantic poetry, Jane Austen’s novels, and Russian literature.

For Seth, the classroom offers both teachers and students the gift of spiritual formation and reformation, and, as he often reminds his students, teaching and learning are ultimately the greatest expressions of human friendship and fellowship. In his role as academic dean, Seth hopes to assist Hunter’s teachers, administrators, and parents as they provide our students with a good, true, and beautiful education.

Seth and his wife, Grey, attend St. Mary’s Episcopal Church–Goochland with their three lovely children: Hugh, Reed, and Sybil. Aside from reading, teaching, and watching college sports, Seth writes and records original music and owns too many guitars (source: Grey Martin).
