Uniform Policy

The Uniform and Dress Code Policy is intended to harmonize the life of a student both at school and at home, and to emphasize the child’s inner attributes and talents rather than outward appearance. The uniform policy reinforces the values of unity, order, and modesty. Uniforms lessen distractions in the classroom, remove the pressure of wearing the latest trends that are associated with social status, and are intended to avoid drawing attention to conspicuous dress. The expectation is cheerful and consistent compliance on uniforms from students and parents, and correspondingly cheerful and consistent enforcement by the school staff.

For returning families, please note there are updates to the uniform and dress code policy from last year.

Uniform Policy for Grammar and Logic School:

The Hunter Uniform and Dress Code Policy requires students to maintain the following standards.

Apparel

  • Clothing must be clean and without holes, tears, or excessive fraying.

  • Sweatshirts and sweaters must be worn with a collared, tucked-in shirt underneath.

  • Shirts are to be tucked in at all times, except during active outside or gym play.

  • Tennis shoes with white socks should be worn on all days of PE instruction. In lieu of tennis shoes, comfortable footwear appropriate for the events of the entire school day are acceptable, remembering daily recess activities. (shoes with elevated heels should not be worn.)

  • Shoes designed for laces are to be worn with appropriate, tied laces.

  • Denim is not appropriate.

Jewelry

  • Excessive jewelry and excessive make-up are not permitted.

  • Boys are not permitted to wear make-up, earrings, bracelets, or exposed necklaces.

  • Jewelry in pierced body parts, with the exception of one pair of earrings for girls, is not permitted.

  • We encourage students to leave all valuable jewelry at home.

Hair, Make-up, and Tattoos

  • All students must keep their hair neatly groomed and conservatively styled. Hair should be kept out of the eyes so as not to interfere with eye contact or line of vision.

  • Hair bows and headbands must be in keeping with school colors: navy blue, white, hunter green, light blue, or white plaid. Exceptions may be made on special holidays.

  • Unnaturally colored hair is not permitted.

  • Excessive, distracting make-up is not permitted.

  • Visible tattoos are not permitted.

Outerwear

  • Only approved uniform apparel items may be worn as the first warmth layer on top of a uniform shirt while in the school building. Acceptable items for the first warmth layer are sweaters, sweatshirts (non-hooded), and fleeces (see specifics below).

  • Non-uniform sweatshirts are not permitted.

  • Raincoats and winter jackets/coats may be worn outdoors (i.e. recess) in addition to the warmth layer but should NOT have slogans, characters, team promotion, and should not be distracting.

Special Dress Days

  • Student apparel shall not display any political messaging, commercial slogans, product promotions, celebrity representations, sports team promotions or any pictures/cartoons of commercial characters.

  • On occasion when the uniform requirement is suspended (i.e. service days, retreats, team spirit days, etc.) the spirit of the dress code is still in effect; student appearance is expected to be neat and modest.

  • Each morning during arrival teachers will review student uniforms; if a student is out of uniform, he or she will be asked to go to the office where the violation will be recorded and communication will be emailed to the parents. For Logic School students, demerits will be given for out of uniform violations upon the third and all subsequent uniform violations.
